hi everyone Natalie resume here of

nutrition Allah Natalie for those of you who haven't seen me in the past I'm a registered dietician and I like to simplify complicated nutrition information for you in these informative videos so this video is about the new

food label that will be appearing in july of 2018 the news broke just last week that they have solidified what will be on the new nutrition label on the back of all of your food products and i'm going to give you what i think are

the most important points in the top about how that will affect you if you are an athlete so let's break it down first let me show you an example of what the food label looks like now the new food label that's coming out and look

pretty similar but they'll be significant changes first off the calories will be the biggest flaw line on the food label so the font will actually be bigger and it will stand out the other thing that goes along with the

calories is that serving sizes will change so if you ever noticed if you buy a say 20 ounce bottle of soda the Sri sizes sometimes are 8 ounces when the bottle is 20 ounces now the service sizes will be more reflective of what

people actually eat in one sitting so services is used to be confusing because you would think that bottle of soda have 50 colors and realistically it could have 250 calories in it if you did all the math to figure out how many

servings were actually in one bottle so on the new food label it'll have the serving size reflective of what the actual container is and then you won't have to do any math you'll actually be able to see how many calories are just

by just looking at the calories lon the other thing that's new all this food label is they're going to put a line for added sugars which i think is really cool this I always think of the yogurts so there's actually natural sugar in

yogurt and its natural sugar in the form of lactose that sugar is not bad for you in any way however there's a lot of extra sugar edit two things for flavor so there will now be a line for added sugars to show you how much sugar is

being added to the product that you're going to be eating this is really big for things like bread chips think so you don't necessarily think have sugar in them but actually do that's really great so those are the basics but there's two

things that I want to talk about in terms of athletes and those are your vitamins so vitamin A and vitamin C always used to be on every food label the FDA has now determined that those are not nutrients of concern which

basically means that no not no one but not a lot of people are deficient in vitamin A and vitamin C so we don't have to label it more vitamin D and potassium are being added to the food label because these

are nutrients that people are very deficient in vitamin D and potassium are extremely important for athletes and I'll tell you why vitamin D is very essential to foam formation and bone health without enough vitamin D you

could have weak bones which can actually just stress fractures in athletes so getting enough vitamin D is very important it's fantastic that it's going to be on the new food labels because you can look at the items you're eating and

make sure that you're getting enough within a day the other thing is it's something that most people about 75% of people are deficient in in the summer you get enough vitamin D from the Sun but what about all the time you spend

indoors at your office sitting at your desk so now if you can see it on a food label and try to quantify how much of a you're eating you can have a better understanding of whether or not you're going to vitamin D in your diet so

that's really fantastic for people who do high-impact sports kind of like running gymnastics dancing because your bones are very sensitive although you're building strong bones with those high impact sports you're also putting your

bones at risk if you land on something wrong if you're wearing the wrong shoes or if you're not getting enough vitamin D the other thing is potassium potassium is one of the electrolytes so electrolytes are sodium and potassium

what that means is within your cells there's a certain ratio of sodium potassium potassium want us to be on the inside of the cell want us to be on the outside and so these electrolytes needs to stay in balance and what they don't

is when we start to feel the effects and a lack of potassium can cause muscle cramping so that's why potassium is very important electrolyte that is in sports drinks because when you're sweating you actually are losing some potassium in

your sweat so knowing how much potassium you have is super important for athletes because it can prevent you from having muscle cramps and it can also prevent you from having fatigue during exercise because if you're not getting enough

electrolytes if you're not replenishing those while you're exercise you're going to cramp up and feel fatigued so those are really the things on the new food label that I feel are most important to you guys the athletes out there if you

think there's something else that's different that's really exciting for you to see on that blue label leave it in the comments below I really love to hear about it thanks for watching once again I'm Natalie rizzo of nutrition Allah

atuli I'll see you next time
